Description
This storage hamper set has been handcrafted in an eco-friendly manner from water reed grass. This form of grass is found in abundance in the North East of India, where it is often referred to by its local name, Kauna. Water reed or Kauna grass belongs to the family Cyperaceae, which is cultivated in the wetlands and marshes of the Imphal valley. Versatile and durable, this grass lends itself beautifully to weaving. The reed is first cut near the base of the plant and dried in the sun. It is also smoked to be preserved and stored for a longer time. The hampers are woven by interlacing the stalks with jute threads using basic tools and then transformed into functional pieces by the women of the Meitei community of Manipur
